[OTC] Why did you do that?

[April = [livejournal.com profile] redhead_druid, follows THIS.]

When David sat on the barstool, he didn’t order anything. He just sat there, staring at the wooden grain of the bar, wondering what he was doing here when he wasn’t going to drink—he never did—and didn’t have anyone to talk to. In fact, he half expected Christopher to wander in, drunk of his ass, but when the door finally opened and closed, it wasn’t the person he had expected.

They had all scattered after they’d managed to catch their breath, and he didn’t catch where any of them were going. Which was good because at the moment, he didn’t want to be anywhere near them, especially as betrayed as he was feeling. The way they orchestrated this behind his back was not what he wanted from them after all the times he’d saved them and fought for them. He’d expect them to at least want to go down swinging, just like he did, and now that he didn’t really have that choice anymore, he didn’t quite know what to do.

He listened to the footsteps as they made their way closer to him, hearing the click of heels behind him. He recognized the sound of the gait without even having to turn around, and while he still didn’t want to see her, it was nice to have something familiar around him again.

“David—”

“Surprised your still here,” he said, cutting her off. “Figured you would have gotten the hell out of dodge by now.”

“David. I wasn’t just going to leave you here, all by yourself.” April paused, sliding herself up onto a bar stool and giving him a look. “Not till I knew you were okay.”

David was just quiet for a minute, trying to figure out what to say to her and not finding the words right away. There were so many questions he wanted to ask, questions that would promote rage and anger, but he didn’t want to do that right now. At the moment, all he wanted to do was sit alone in his own silence and find out where they were going to go from there.

“Why?”

The word slipped out of his mouth before he could stop it, and frankly he almost didn’t want to. He needed to know why. He needed to understand.

“David—there was nothing left for us there. We needed to survive.”

He continued to be quiet, holding in his thoughts and trying to think of what to say, what he could think of to try and make the situation make sense to him.

“And what if we could have survived there?”

Her voice took on that pitying sound, that uncomfortable sound that he hated with every fiber of his being. “David—”

“I would have rather died there, April.”

April swallowed slightly, brushing her hair off her shoulder and trying to explain it so that he would make sense. “We wouldn’t have been able to live with ourselves if we’d just let you die back there.”

He looked down at his hands again, before rubbing his knuckles lightly, and getting off the stool. “I can’t do this, April.” He gave her a long look, before shaking his head and walking away. “I can’t.”
