When David sat on the barstool, he didn’t order anything. He just sat there, staring at the wooden grain of the bar, wondering what he was doing here when he wasn’t going to drink—he never did—and didn’t have anyone to talk to. In fact, he half expected Christopher to wander in, drunk of his ass, but when the door finally opened and closed, it wasn’t the person he had expected.
They had all scattered after they’d managed to catch their breath, and he didn’t catch where any of them were going. Which was good because at the moment, he didn’t want to be anywhere near them, especially as betrayed as he was feeling. The way they orchestrated this behind his back was not what he wanted from them after all the times he’d saved them and fought for them. He’d expect them to at least want to go down swinging, just like he did, and now that he didn’t really have that choice anymore, he didn’t quite know what to do.
He listened to the footsteps as they made their way closer to him, hearing the click of heels behind him. He recognized the sound of the gait without even having to turn around, and while he still didn’t want to see her, it was nice to have something familiar around him again.
