oh Ruby, don't take your love to town [oh Ruby, for God's sake turn around]

“Ow—shit—sonuvabitch—”
It was safe to say that David was one of the worst patients on the planet. He didn’t like being injured, he didn’t like being told to sit tight and stay put, even if that does mean making his current injuries worse. David was a warrior, despite whatever he denied to the contrary, the kind of guy who was going to keep fighting until one of them was dead—preferably not him, but if that was the case then so be it. David fought. David was the guy charging in at the front of the line.
David was not an over glorified baby-sitter, though Ruby seemed to insist on treating him like one. And that was when she wasn’t pissed as hell at him and dropping his injured self rather unceremoniously down in the bed in the motel room. He’s pretty sure she’s almost got a smile on her face when she sees him in pain, and there’s a small part of his brain that knows that he deserves it, but most of him is still pretty pissed off, so that small part of his brain is getting ignored for the moment.
“What the fuck, Ruby?”
“What the fuck?” Ruby said, arching an eyebrow in his direction as she placed her hands on her hips. “I told you to stay with the kids. Stay with the kids. What part of that is so hard for you to fucking process?”
“The staying part, for one,” David said, giving her a look. “I’m not an idiot, Ruby. I know how to handle myself in a fight, something you seem to keep forgetting.”
“These aren’t dragons and alien bugs, David. These are demons. Demons don’t kill as easy as everything else does.”
“You think those things were easy?” David said, glaring back at her. “You don’t know what I can and can’t handle. And I say that because you don’t let me try.”
“Oh, so what? I should have just left Christopher and April with the kids just so I could put you on the front lines, and see what you’re capable of?” she sneered before shaking her head and starting to walk away from him reaching for the first aid kit on the other side of the room. “You didn’t know what you were getting into, I told you to hang back.”
“So you were looking out for me? If you’re so busy watching my back, who’s watching yours?” She knew exactly what he meant by that—he could tell by the glare on her face when she leaned in to tend to one of the many bumps and bruises that he’d received earlier. “You know what I mean.”
“Dean and Sam have my back,” she replied coolly.
“Sam, maybe,” he continued, not backing down on this. “Dean—not so much.” Then came the glare again, harder than before, and he just met her eyes with a cool even stare. “Don’t tell me that you don’t see it. You know that if he got half that chance he would take you out before you could even blink. And you really think that Sam would try and stop him, to save you? You know that Sam would pick his brother over you in a heartbeat, Ruby. You have to.”
“What goes on between me and Dean—”
“Is none of my business?” David finished for her, before snorting and shaking his head. “Sorry. Thought this was a relationship for a second. Because if it was, a guy trying to kill the girl I’m with would kind of be my business. But guess I was wrong—thanks for clearing that up for me.”
Ruby’s breath caught slightly, and he was starting to catch more of the worry in her tone, and that the anger was lessening. She really did know what she was talking about, he knew that. Didn’t piss him off any less. “You can’t always be the fucking hero, David.”
“Maybe not, but I can still fucking try,” he sighed, before letting the air expel from his chest slightly. He’d lost too many people because he was forced to hold back before, and he wasn’t going to let it happen this time around. April used to give Senna the same looks he saw Dean give Ruby. In the end, April was the one who killed her. David wasn’t looking to have history repeat itself all over again. “I’m not losing anyone again, Ru. I just—I can’t.”
“So you’d rather have them lose you?” She snorted, shaking her head before going back to what she had been doing, leaning over him to try and clean the cut—more like a gash, really—about an inch over his eyebrow and rising up towards his hairline. “You and Dean. Two peas in a fucking pod.”
That earned her a bit more than a glare, as it was relatively safe to say that David and Dean didn’t get along, all things considered, but the comparison was there, and it was the truth. David knew it, but he didn’t have to like it.
He sat there, as patiently as he could given the fact that he was wincing and bitching every minute as she cleaned the cut, but she didn’t say anything, just smirked on feeling a shudder run through him when she hit a part that particularly hurt. “Bitch,” he muttered, and she punched him in the shoulder none-to-lightly, before starting to walk away again. He watched her go for a minute, before shifting slightly so that he could try and reach for her arm. “Ruby—”
“Don’t.” She made her way back over to him, then went about dressing the gash on his head, only shifting her body slightly so that she could look at him. “You’ll just make things worse.”
“My injuries or this fight?” It was impossible to know what she was referring to at times. Her eyes narrowed into a real look, and he smirked. “Both, then.”
She moved her hands from where they were on his head, and leaned back as though she was going to say something, but he cut her off, pulling her into a deep kiss before she could get a word out. At first she fought him, pushing back against his shoulders as he pulled her in closer, but eventually she relented and leaned into the kiss, pushing herself up on the bed and starting to straddle his hips slightly. When he finally broke the kiss for air, she just smirked at him, not letting him go very far.
“You’re still an asshole and an idiot. And this isn’t done.”
He didn’t say anything, just pulled her back in again once he had caught his breath. He really wasn’t in the mood to keep fighting with her, but he would keep this notes very firmly in mind.
